A new Internet auction site was launched Monday, with hopes of capitalizing on the recent worst recession in decades, and attracting the rich and famous.

BillionaireXchange tested their idea during a 10-month phase and reports that it played a role in the exchange of more than $180 million in assets. Co-founder of BillionaireXchange said that the majority of the types of transaction that they had been getting seemed to be distressed rich people from the United States.

"Because of the current economic conditions in the U.S. we're seeing a lot of people who need to actually trade out or trade down from some of their luxury items and facilitate that transaction somewhere discreetly and privately so that they don't have to deal with the shame and or embarrassment of downgrade."

The aim of the website is to exploit a market niche which begins with internet auction sites such as eBay and ends with classy auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's.

The website deals with the sales and trades of everything from arts and antiques to commercial properties, businesses and foreclosed homes. It requires of prospective members a minimum of $2 million in verifiable net worth. BillionaireXchange will charge sellers 5% of their sales revenue on the site.

The Miami-based company currently counts among its confirmed members, athletes, actors and other notable high-society types. The five-member firm claims to have signed up more than 26,000 multi-millionaires and nearly a dozen billionaires, already.
