Twitter might be a crazy fad these days, with those lovely 140-character outbursts having international significance after fueling the post Iranian elections protests. If Twitter is so popular, then what's left for the good old fashioned blog?
And isn't it scary that we're calling a phenomenon and even a coined word that's only a few years old "old fashioned" already? Is the world spinning way too fast these days? The answer is yes. Slow down, people. "Blog" is just not as radically new fashioned as tweet. Let's leave it at that.

Say you've got a product, which many of us do, and you want to buzz it around the net. You can put out a short little tweet, get people to know you're out there, and see the responses. Twitter will get people to know you exist. But what else? You need to really describe yourself and convince people in order to sell and be able to afford that vibrating footrest you've always wanted. A few simple tweets aren't going to get people to take you all the seriously. So twitter is like a…Moped. It's small, fuel efficient, and it'll get people to take notice for a second. But if you want to get somewhere far, you'll have to get a real car, because a Moped on a highway will get blown in the dust, and you'll probably swallow one too many bugs while you're at it.
As I've learned from one of my blogging gurus Charles night of Altsearchengines, blogging has advantages that Twitter can't much touch. In a blog, you can maintain relationships with companies, having them write guest posts, getting their number, having a meeting, going out to lunch, finding out you both like cheesecake, finding about their next moves and products, being a networker. Keeping in touch with the contacts you make on a blog opens up miles of opportunity that you can't generate with a tweet.
The short story hasn't killed the novel. Good writers use both venues. So should you. Get to it!
