Google
Keyword Tool – this guy helps you organize and rank successful keywords, to keep using the ones that work and statistically eliminate the ones that don't. You can get it through a Google Adwords account, search 250 keywords and get alternative suggestions for each. The keywords used can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet and then compared to see which ones achieve the highest results.
WordTracker.com – sometimes there are keywords out there that are highly searched but aren't used that often. These goldmines provide windows of opportunity from serious search engine optimization, and you can find them through WordTracker.
SpyFu.Com – see who the competition is. This gives you information on sites that are directly competing with you for keywords. This way you can focus your attack on your best rivals and focus your marketing energy.
SEO Quake – a Firefox plugin that allows you to see the page ranking of any site you visit. Google ranking, backlinks, stuff like that. You right click on any site and get a wealth of information.
These are fair tools. However, I recently heard of a guy who designs programs that translate blogs using Google Translator into unreadable computerized English with a whole bunch of links that push up results on a search. The blogs' URLs are secret, since if Google finds out about them, they'll discredit the link (which is why I'm not mentioning any names of course).
Something tells me that, sooner or later, they'll figure it out and make the search technology a little more tight, secure, and organic. For now, you can either cheat, or use those tools.
