Microsoft Bing Trudging Along in Pursuit of Google

When any one power gets too strong, as the saying goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Not that Google is corrupt or anything, and indeed they are doing great things on the net and for humanity in general. But at some point, they will get lazy, sitting at the top all alone, and someone will race past them at the finish line. This is why, as we reported earlier, Microsoft and Yahoo are teaming up against the colossus.

It was reported this week that ’s search engine Bing is making slight gains, ending July with an 8.9% market share in online advertising revenue. This is up just about 1% since its debut, with hovering around the 20% mark consistently.

’s gains, though, were quite expensive. Though it got about 29 million morebing search queries in July than June with 1.21 billion in total, they’ve been doing an advertising blitz worth $100 million to promote the search engine. Microsoft’s online division has lost about $3.5 billion in the last two years, and Google keeps encroaching, coming out with new products, and now even an operating system that could, if successful, put a serious dent in the Windows throne.

Who knows. This could be a good thing. Depending on how the Microsoft Yahoo deal plays out, we may see an epic battle about to begin between the new king and the old boys. Who are you rooting for?
