Google Rolls the Dice in China

Google, ChinaWere you wondering why I hadn’t posted on this yet? Wonder no more. Online Marketing has the final, or so we think final, scoop on Google’s standoff with the Chinese government.

I am sure that you’ve all heard by now – Google is ending its Communist-mandated of search results and directing queries to its unfiltered Hong Kong-based service. Well, the Great Firewall immediately slammed down on some of those results, and there are reports of possible backlash involving other Chinese business dealings for Google, especially in the mobile space.

Meanwhile, the Chinese authorities are looking for clues as to how other tech companies will react to Google’s actions, and they are seeking signs regarding ’s near-term strategies for balancing economic reform with maintaining its iron grip on the information flow.

Media reports recently showed that some unfiltered search results from Google’s Hong Kong-based service were getting intercepted. Tuesday’s New York Times reported that deals involving Google mobile services may be in jeopardy because of their actions. They reported that China Mobile, the country’s largest carrier, would backtrack on its decision to use Google’s mobile search engine in its phones, and that China Unicom will reconsider using the Android operating system in a new smart-phone.

China could expel Google, or Google could always leave on its own. Google claims to be standing on principle, but only after it says it was hacked.
