Biz Stone of Twitter called the Retweeting phenomenon “a great example of Twitter teaching us what it wants to be.” Twitter has begun building Retweets into the site's architecture, but the problem is that it did not give enough room for the commentary that users might like to Tweet, after their respective Retweet.
Users were instantly outraged at the sites misinterpretation of an organic trend. If such a simple program as Twitter is to stay on top, the trick will be to pay attention to the feedback of its users; or will it?
In just three years Twitter became an online powerhouse. It expects to have 25 million users by the end of this year, 100 million by 2010 and 1 billion, by 2013.
CEO Evan Williams is a strangely uncompetitive internet mogul, or better put the writer of a mysteriously elusive business strategy. Companies like Google, Facebook and countless others are integrating Twitter into their business plans, without buying it, and Williams just does not seem concerned.
The company’s revenue will be roughly a modest $4 million by the end of this year. And it should be noted that Twitter turned down a $500 million acquisition offer from Facebook last November.
So if not a vicious business bulldog, where IS William's creative energy at? Apparently the focus is on pleasing a tiny, double-figure work force. That means, free lunches, visits by politicians, singers, and the director of the TV show, "House"
Earlier this year the company held a discussion called "What Do We Want to Be When We Grow Up?" Biz Stone said, "If there are three sentences I'd use to describe Twitter, one of them would be 'I don't know.'"
