One Michigan online marketing company is doing something a bit unconventional to pep up people’s spirits. Seven staff members of Oneupweb are hitting the streets to offer free consulting throughout Michigan, just to meet the people and to help out. They don’t expect to get any business out of the stunt – they’re just having fun, seeing what they can do to perk up the economy a bit.

“We were all sitting around one day, talking about the economy, and businesses closing and stuff like that,” said Maureen Michaels, public relations manager. Lisa Wehr, Oneupweb’s CEO, had one of those ideas. “Lisa, out of nowhere came up with this idea. Everyone got quiet then really excited.” They’re not selling anything on their run. Just getting around and lightening people’s days with free online marketing advice. After the road trip, they’ll be giving out a “how-to” guide to local businesses, collecting business cards and posting them online, creating a Michigan database.

“Every year, we try to pick one type of philanthropic give-back,” Wehr said. “There are so many businesses within our state that really need help. They’re in survival mode, and they have blinders on. They need help to see the bigger picture.”

On their road trip, businesses they encounter will complete a short questionnaire and access their Web site using from Oneupweb’s traveling wireless-connected mobile home. Oneupweb will the prescribe advice for the company to increase sales, and then on to the next city.

“The main point is so we can try to help other businesses; this is what we really do well,” said Rob Aldrich, another senior staff member.

The staff will post Facebook and Twitter updates, photos and videos with a daily blog of their trip.

“I absolutely dig helping people succeed online,” Wehr said.
