זה מה שאובמה כתב ב 1983
בשנת 1983, חודשים ספורים לפני שסיים את לימודיו באוניברסיטת קולומביה היוקרתית, הכין ברק אובמה כתבה לעיתון מקומי אודות שתי קבוצות סטודנטיאליות שונות אשר מתנגדות למירוץ החימוש הגרעיני. את הכתבה בשלמותה ניתן לראות כאן.
הטקסט ברובו משמים ומשעמם, ומכיל ציטוטים לרוב של המרואיינים הפציפיסטים. עם זאת, ניתן למצוא כמה פסקאות של פרשנות אישית אותה החדיר אובמה אל בין השורות. שוב, אין פה שום דבר מרעיש, ומדובר בפיסת חדשות שנכתבה לפני 26 שנה, אבל אני באופן אישי מוצא דברים כאלו מרתקים.
בסוף השליש הראשון של המאמר, אובמה מתייחס לפזמון המפורסם “כולם מדברים על שלום, אף אחד לא מדבר על צדק” (בביצוע המקורי כמובן):
When Peter Tosh sings that “everybody’s asking for peace, but nobody’s asking for justice,” one is forced to wonder whether disarmament or arms control issues, severed from economic and political issues, might be another instance of focusing on the symptoms of a problem instead of the disease itself.
בערך בסוף השליש השני אנו פתאום נתקלים במשפט פלצני ומתחכם, הראוי לסטודנט למשפטים בקולומביה:
Indeed, the most pervasive malady of the collegiate system specifically, and the American experience generally, is that elaborate patterns of knowledge and theory have been disembodied from individual choices and government policy.
ובסוף המאמר, אובמה עושה את הטעות הקשה ביותר — טעות של טירונים ללא ספק — ומייצר השוואות בין מושא סיקורו לבין היטלר:
The Western World did not complain in 1933 because Hitler, though a fascist and a totalitarian, was seen, like countless American puppet dictators today, as someone who leaves the established order in place.
Not so the Greens. If a group of young, anti-establishment pacifists with unusual ideas and uncomfortable answers to hard questions terrifies us more today than Hitler, Himmler, Goering and Goebbels did back in 1933, our terror says more about us than it does about the Greens or the Germans. It indicates that we have failed to comprehend the meaning of Nazism and blind obedience to authority in their full horror, and that we, unlike the Greens, have yet ourselves to learn the democratic lesson that we have taught the Germans so well.
סופר עיתונאי הבחור כבר לא יהיה, אני מניח. הדבר היחידי שהוא יכתוב זה את ספרי ההסטוריה.
דווקא אובמה כתב כמה ספרים, הכניס מהם לא מעט כסף ואפילו כותב בצורה רהוטה.
חבל שאתה משמיץ.
נכון, אבל הספרים של אובמה נכתבו בשנים האחרונות, ואילו המאמר הזה נכתב “בתחילת דרכו”, ולכן הוא מעניין.
ולרגע לא פקפקתי ברהיטותו של האיש. אלא בניסוחים בהם השתמש לפני 26 שנה.
הספר שלו “זכרונות מאבי” דווקא נכתב ב1995, לא “בשנים האחרונות”.
