According to recent studies, the single most prominent factor driving consumers away from online purchasing is security fears.
The internet is still very new and the paranoia is still very real – saying that shopping online is safer than in a store, a common cliché, just doesn't hold much weight when it comes time to "put it on the card" electronically. It's like telling someone who is scared of flying that they are safer on a plane then they are in their car, it is logical but it does not work to subside a fear which is not rational.
That being said, the public is not stupid. Planes do crash and hackers are a genuine threat, perhaps not as bad as many think, but real none the less.
Half of consumers, who have ever purchased anything online, have cancelled their orders at one time or another, or abandoned their 'shopping cart', due to nothing other than security fears. And it is also important to know that security is on the mind of 90% of online shoppers. So if you are an e-tailer the trick will be in getting those sales up, and not having customers cancel their shopping carts. To put it simply, making e-shoppers feel safer – that is the name of the game.
